Saltwater Β· Late autumn through early spring peak on Taiwan, Fujian and Zhejiang reefs; winter fish are fattest

Nibbler

Girella punctata

The nibbler is the iso angler's 'heimao' (black hair) β€” the dark, algae-grazing reef fish of Taiwan, Fujian and Zhejiang whose wary, delicate bite on krill-paste baits has made it a rock-fishing obsession across East Asia. In Japan the gure (mejina) is the number-one target of rocky-shore float fishing β€” the fish that draws more Japanese shore anglers than any other.

Identifying features

  • Deep, oval body, dark grey-brown to nearly black, with fine pale speckling when fresh
  • Small mouth with flattened, tricuspid nibbling teeth for grazing algae
  • Scales notably SMALL for its size β€” a key split from the white chub 'baimao' (Girella leonina), which has larger scales
  • Gill-cover rear edge is smooth and dark, without the pale margin typical of G. leonina
  • Single long dorsal fin with a low spiny front section; tail slightly forked to straight

Habits

  • Grazes algae and small invertebrates off rocks in Taiwan, Fujian, Zhejiang and Japan
  • Forms loose schools over reef flats, breaking up into singles in rough water
  • Extremely wary of lines and shadows β€” the classic test of light-tackle iso technique
  • Winter fish carry rich fat and are the most prized for the table
  • Feeds most confidently in white-water wash around the rocks

How to catch them

Iso float fishing with krill paste Rock fishing

Rig: Iso rod, small float rig with krill-paste bait and matching groundbait drifted through the wash

Bait/lure: Krill paste, small krill, nori mixes

Key tip: Keep groundbait and hookbait drifting together at the same depth β€” nibblers reject anything that moves differently.

Light rock float rigs Rock fishing

Rig: Light float rig, small hooks and fine leader fished over algae-covered rock

Bait/lure: Shrimp pieces, krill, bread paste

Key tip: Strike at the first dip of the float β€” the bite is a nibble, not a pull.
