Barred Knifejaw
Oplegnathus fasciatus
The barred knifejaw is the rock-fishing star of the northwest Pacific β a boldly barred reef fish with beak-like fused teeth, famous for crushing shellfish and for its power on iso tackle. In Japan the ishidai is, together with its spotted relative, a pillar of rocky-shore bottom fishing (soko-mono), taken on sea-urchin and crab baits at famous grounds from Izu to Kyushu.
