Freshwater · No targeted angling: release threatened species year-round and follow local lake rules and closed seasons strictly
Chirostoma estor
⚠ IDENTIFICATION AND RELEASE ONLY — the pescado blanco (Chirostoma estor) is an Endangered silverside of Mexico's central highland lakes, now surviving mainly in Lakes Pátzcuaro and Zirahuén (Michoacán); Lake Chapala, its type locality, holds only historical records. Note the names: 'charal' is the shared name for the small Chirostoma species, while this page covers the large pescado blanco. Do not target or keep it — release every Chirostoma immediately, keeping it in the water, and check local rules for each lake.
⚠ Conservation status: Endangered on the IUCN Red List (B2ab(ii,iii,iv,v), e.T191151A1971275, assessed 2018). Mexican listing: threatened (Amenazada) under NOM-059-ECOL-1994; the category under the current NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010 could not be verified for this page, so only the 1994 listing is stated. Naming note: 'charal' properly names the small Chirostoma species collectively — this fish is the large pescado blanco, which is why the page was renamed from its former 'charal' slug.

Bait/lure: Certified farmed fish from markets only
Key tip: For the traditional dish, buy only certified aquaculture pescado blanco, never wild threatened fish.

Reel · Budget
1000-2000 size spinning reel
≈ US$40-70
Balances a light rod and handles 4-6 lb line — all panfishing ever asks of a reel.

Micro jigs, small hooks and slip floats (panfish kit)
≈ US$15-25
A bobber over a tiny jig tipped with a worm catches every sunfish, crappie and perch in the lake.

Small charales 8-15 cm; pescado blanco (C. estor) historically to about 42 cm TL — rarely large today
Historically prized ('pescado blanco' and charales are a pre-Hispanic food tradition), but wild threatened species must NOT be kept — eat only legally farmed fish from certified aquaculture.
Regulations vary by area and can change in-season — always check the official rules for your area before you fish. Regulations guide →
