Pirate Perch
Aphredoderus sayanus
The pirate perch is a small, dark swamp fish and not a true perch at all β it is the only living member of its family. Adults are famous for an anatomical oddity: the vent and urogenital opening sit under the throat. Studies also show it gives off chemical camouflage, so prey insects do not flee from it.
Seasons Β· Peak

Identifying features
- Adult vent and urogenital opening located under the throat β found in no other local fish
- Dark olive to almost black body with speckled sides
- Dark vertical bar below the eye and a dark blotch at the base of the tail
- Large, slightly upturned mouth for a fish of its size
- Deep, compressed body with a rounded tail fin
Habits
- Nocturnal β hides in vegetation and leaf litter by day
- Chemical camouflage masks its scent, so insect prey does not flee from it
- Feeds at night on insect larvae, small crustaceans and tiny fish
- Spawns in late winter to spring among submerged roots and leaf litter
- Tolerates warm, low-oxygen swamp water that many fish avoid
Distribution
Where to find them

- Blackwater creek weed edges in the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida
- Slow, weedy ditches and lowland stream margins
