Saltwater Β· Year-round in Florida; best spring through autumn over sand and grass

Sand Perch

Diplectrum formosum

The true sand perch is a small sea bass of Gulf and south Atlantic sand bottoms β€” not the silver perch, a drum-family croaker that wrongly shares its name locally. It hovers over sand in bays and around piers, marked by blue-green wavy lines on the head, and is taken on tiny shrimp-baited hooks; lively ones are also valued as live bait.
