Shadow Bass
Ambloplites ariommus
The shadow bass is a big-eyed rock bass cousin of clear southern streams, named for the mottled camouflage that lets it vanish against rock and shadow. Locally it shares the name 'goggle-eye' with the warmouth and rock bass, so check the big eye and mottling rather than the name alone. It is a modest panfish that ambushes prey from cover.

Identifying features
- Very large eye for its head size β the reason for the name 'goggle-eye'
- Mottled olive-brown camouflage with rows of dark blotches and saddles
- Deep, compressed panfish body like a rock bass
- Dark stripe through the eye and a dark blotch on the gill cover edge
- Colour shifts quickly to match rock, wood or shadow
Habits
- Holds tight to rocks, logs and root cover in clear current
- Ambushes crayfish, insects and small fish from cover
- Mottled camouflage makes it hard to spot even in shallow clear water
- Spawns in late spring; the male guards a gravel nest near cover
- More at home in flowing clear creeks than in still swamp water
Distribution
Where to find them
- Ozark creek pools around boulders and root wads
- Clear Gulf-slope streams in the Deep South and Louisiana
- Rocky Tennessee-Kentucky and Texas creek runs
Where they live
How to catch them
Small jigs and baits around cover River
Rig: Light spinning rod, 1/16-1/8 oz jig or small hook with minnow or crayfish, cast tight to rocks and woody cover
Bait/lure: Small jigs, minnows, crayfish
Key tip: Cast right against cover and let the bait sit β shadow bass rarely chase far from their ambush spot.
Fly fishing small streamers River
Rig: Light fly rod with small woolly-bugger style streamers, fished slowly through Ozark and Gulf-slope creek pools
Bait/lure: Small streamers
Key tip: Fish streamers deep and slow around boulders; strikes come as the fly passes the fish's cover.
