Spotted Mandarin Fish

Siniperca scherzeri

The smaller, spotted cousin of the mandarin fish, living in streams and lakes south of the Yangtze including Guizhou's mountain waters. Stream populations are small and local β€” catch and release is the right tone here.

Identifying features

  • Perch-like body densely covered in small dark spots β€” more finely and evenly spotted than the mandarin fish
  • Golden-brown to olive background with spots extending onto the fins
  • Dark stripe through the eye, as in its larger cousin
  • Protruding lower jaw and spiny first dorsal fin
  • Smaller adult size β€” most stream fish are well under 12 in

Habits

  • Ambush predator of rocky stream pools, taking small fish and shrimp
  • More stream-loving than the mandarin fish, common in clear hill rivers
  • Feeds at dawn, dusk and on overcast days from rock cover
  • Populations in small mountain streams are limited β€” release fish to keep them healthy
  • South of the Yangtze from Fujian and Guangdong to Guizhou and Guangxi
