Saltwater Β· Late spring through autumn

Striped Red Mullet

Mullus surmuletus

A small goatfish that tastes the bottom with its two chin barbels, rooting constantly in sand and mud for worms and crustaceans. It is one of the Mediterranean's most coveted table fish β€” the rouget of French kitchens and the salmonete of Spanish ones. Bites are shy and tackle must be fine, but the plate repays the care.

Identifying features

  • Two long white chin barbels under the lower jaw β€” the instant giveaway
  • Pink-red body with three or four yellow-gold lengthwise stripes
  • Steep, blunt snout with the eye set high on the head
  • First dorsal fin banded with yellow and dark markings
  • Large, loose scales that rub off easily; colour fades fast after capture

Habits

  • Tastes and digs in the bottom with its two chin barbels, hunting worms, prawns, small crabs and molluscs
  • Feeds in small groups, each fish churning up puffs of sediment
  • Other fish, including wrasse and bream, trail a feeding mullet to snatch what it stirs up
  • Feeds by day; moves to deeper water in winter
  • Shy of heavy tackle β€” bites are delicate taps on fine gear

Where to find them

  • Sand channels between Mediterranean rocks and Posidonia meadows
  • Harbour mouths and mixed ground off beaches
  • Inshore reef edges from small boats

Where they live

Sand and mud patches among rock and seagrassShallow mixed ground off beaches and harboursRocky reef margins in 10-200 ft (3-60 m)

How to catch them

Fine bottom fishing over sand-rock edges Shore

Rig: Light ledger rig with a small running lead and fine-wire hooks, laid from shore over sand patches beside rock and seagrass

Bait/lure: Small worm or prawn pieces on size 8-12 hooks

Key tip: Keep baits small and lines fine β€” mullet inspect big hooks and leave them; wait for a second, committed tap before striking.

Drifting and bottom fishing over mixed ground Boat

Rig: Light boat rod with a small two-hook paternoster, drifted slowly over mixed ground or anchored on the edge of sand channels

Bait/lure: Lugworm, prawn pieces or squid strips

Key tip: Fish the ground where you can see barbels working, or follow the puffs of sediment that betray a feeding group.
