Freshwater · Late spring through summer; best at dawn in warm, calm weather

Tench

Tinca tinca

The tench — 丁桂鱼 — is Eurasia's olive, red-eyed still-water carp: a thick-skinned, slime-coated bottom feeder of weedy bays, native across Europe and northern Asia — in China only to Xinjiang's Irtysh and Ulungur waters — and introduced to southern British Columbia, where it is established in Okanagan lakes such as Christina and Osoyoos.

  • Males have noticeably longer, curved pelvic fins that reach past the vent

Habits

  • Eurasian species; in China native only to still bays of Xinjiang's Irtysh system and Lake Ulungur, with introductions elsewhere
  • Feeds on the bottom on insect larvae, snails and plant matter, often at dawn

How to catch them

Still-water bottom fishing with corn and bread Lake

Rig: Ledger or method-feeder rig on a clear spot beside weeds, baited with corn, bread or small pellets in European carp style

Bait/lure: Sweet corn, bread, pellets

Key tip: Pre-bait a clear patch at dawn for several days; tench are shy and visit baited spots early before other fish arrive.

Float fishing at dawn near weed Lake

Rig: Light float rig laid overdepth beside reed and lily edges, bait resting on the bottom

Bait/lure: Worms, corn, maggots

Key tip: Watch for the classic tench bubbles and tiny float lifts at first light; strike at the second, firmer movement.

On the table

Good when taken from clean water — a valued food fish in Xinjiang and Europe, though it can taste muddy from silty ponds and benefits from careful preparation.
