Thicklip Grey Mullet

Chelon labrosus

Britain's 'mullet cult' fish β€” famously wary, infuriatingly hard to hook, and worth a devoted following around harbours and marinas for exactly that reason. It will eat bread in plain sight off a harbour wall while seeing everything you do.

Identifying features

  • Thick, blunt upper lip covered with wart-like bumps (papillae) β€” the feature that names it
  • Small downturned mouth at the bottom of a broad, flattened head
  • Silvery-grey body with 4-6 darker lengthwise stripes and a white belly
  • Golden patch on the gill cover, less bright than on the golden grey mullet
  • Short pectoral fin that does not reach the eye when folded forward

Habits

  • Grazes algae and biofilm off harbour walls, rocks and mud β€” the surface film is part of its diet
  • Famously wary: it mouths a bait and rejects it before many anglers see the float move
  • Feeds hardest on hot, settled days and on the first of the flood tide
  • Travels in small, nervous shoals that spook at shadows and heavy footsteps
  • Spawns offshore in winter; inshore fish are present much of the year

How to catch them

Sight float fishing along harbour walls Shore

Rig: Light match rod, small crystal waggler locked 3-4 in above bottom, size 14 hook with bread flake, fine groundbait little and often

Bait/lure: Bread flake fished on sight

Key tip: Wear polarised glasses and watch the fish, not the float β€” a thicklip sucks bread in and blows it out before the float moves.

Light ledgering over rock and kelp Rock fishing

Rig: Light ledger setup from rock ledges with a 2-4 lb hooklength and size 12 hook, bait placed just in front of kelp edges

Bait/lure: Cheese paste or bread ball

Key tip: Move almost silently and cast nothing heavy β€” spook the shoal once and it is gone for the tide.
