Golden Grey Mullet

Chelon aurata

The hardest of Europe's mullets to fool: a slim, gold-marked fish of harbours and estuaries that grazes at the surface in summer. The gold spot on its gill cover separates it from its cousins at a glance. It is regarded as the connoisseur's mullet β€” scarce, shy, and a real test of the finest tackle and a quiet approach.

  • Upper lip thin and smooth, without the thicklip's warty swellings

Habits

  • A connoisseur's mullet β€” slimmer, scarcer and shyer than the thicklip
  • Grazes algae, detritus and tiny invertebrates from the surface film and harbour walls

  • Feeds best on a flooding tide in calm, warm conditions
  • Leaps and skitters across the surface when startled or netted

How to catch them

Float fishing with bread in harbour corners Shore

Rig: Long float rod with a small crystal waggler and a size 12-16 hook, fished inches under the surface in harbour corners, fed with bread mash

Bait/lure: Bread flake or small maddie worms on size 12-16 hooks

Key tip: Feed little and often and stay low and still β€” golden greys refuse at the slightest vibration through the quay.

Light trotting in rocky gullies Rock fishing

Rig: Ultra-fine float tackle drifting a bread flake or maddie worm with the tide through rocky shore gullies and calm coves

Bait/lure: Tiny bread or worm pieces presented almost weightless

Key tip: Let the bait drift naturally with the current and keep the line dead β€” any drag spooks the whole shoal.
