Tai Diao Hand-Pole Starter Kit β Carp & Crucian
Common carp and crucian carp in lakes, reservoirs and ponds β China's classic hand-pole fishing, no reel involved
Tai diao is how most of China fishes fresh water: a long telescopic pole with the line tied straight to the tip β no reel at all. You fish a bristle float with total precision, reading bites of a fraction of a millimetre, and play the fish on the pole's bend and the line's stretch. This kit covers the two everyday targets: delicate crucian carp on fine rigs, and common carp that demand a step up in power.

The complete kit list
Hand poles
Get: Two telescopic carbon hand poles, 4.5 m and 5.4 m, crucian/carp all-round action β no reel seat, line ties to the tip
Why it's in the kit: The pole IS the system: length reaches the far edge of the near-shore drop-off, and its progressive bend is your drag. 4.5 m covers most pond and lake margins; 5.4 m reaches bigger carp water.
Budget: Glass-carbon composite pair β β $18β28
Step-up: High-carbon pair, lighter and stiffer β β $55β90

Get: Main line 1.0β1.2 with 0.6β0.8 sub-line, twin sleeve hooks (#3β#5), pre-tied and wound on foam spools
Why it's in the kit: Crucian bites are whispers β a fine rig and tiny barbless-style sleeve hooks connect with bites a carp rig would never register. Pre-tied sets mean you start fishing, not knot-tying.
Budget: Three pre-tied crucian rigs β β $4β6
Step-up: Five rigs on better line with finer hooks β β $8β12

Get: Main line 2.0β2.5 with 1.2β1.5 sub-line, twin Iseama hooks (#6β#9), pre-tied
Why it's in the kit: The step-up for common carp: stronger line and a hook pattern that holds in a carp's rubbery lip. Swap the whole rig in a minute when bigger fish show up.
Budget: Three pre-tied carp rigs β β $4β6
Step-up: Five rigs + spare hook packs β β $8β12

Get: Three standing (bristle-tail) floats of different buoyancy (about 1.2 g, 1.8 g, 2.5 g) + a float box
Why it's in the kit: In tai diao the float is the whole bite detector. Three loadings cover calm shallows for crucian through deeper carp water; the box keeps the fragile tails alive.
Budget: Basic nano-material float set + box β β $6β9
Step-up: Reed or premium nano floats with crisper signals β β $14β22

Get: One bag of commercial powdered bait (crucian/carp all-round) + wire-drawing powder (gluten) + a bait tray
Why it's in the kit: Mix it dry and fluffy for pulling small balls (la er) that crucian sip in, or knead it firmer (cuo er) to sit on the bottom for carp. The tray keeps the mix at the right moisture all session.
Budget: Bait + drawing powder + tray β β $5β8
Step-up: Two bait flavours + powder + tray + additive β β $10β16
Compare prices (coming soon)Pole rest & landing net
Get: Adjustable pole rest (rod stand) + short-handle fine-mesh landing net
Why it's in the kit: Tai diao is fished with the pole parked on the rest, float watched, hands free β the rest is not optional. The fine-mesh net lands crucian without shredding fins or tangling the twin hooks.
Budget: Basic rest + net β β $6β10
Step-up: Carbon rest + quick-fold competition net β β $14β22

Get: Space beans, figure-8 swivels, lead sheet and lead seats, spare float seats, line winders, hook wallet
Why it's in the kit: The invisible hardware that makes a rig tuneable: space beans lock the float at depth, lead sheet trims it to a hair, and winders keep every pre-tied set ready to clip on.
Budget: Accessory assortment pack β β $3β5
Step-up: Full assortment in a small rig box β β $6β10

Your first trip with this kit
Plumb the depth first: slide the float until the bait just touches bottom, then trim the lead so only 2β3 float bristles show. Cast or swing the rig to the same spot every time and feed a pinch of bait there β tai diao is won by accuracy, not distance. Lift the pole gently on any bristle movement; a slow sink or a tiny lift is a crucian, so strike with the wrist, not the whole arm.
