Saltwater Β· Year-round in the Gulf surf; best spring through fall

Gulf Kingfish

Menticirrhus littoralis

The Gulf surf 'whiting' β€” a plain silvery panfish of the wash zone with a single small chin barbel and the steepest, highest forehead of the three kingfish species. It has no swim bladder, so it cannot croak like its drum relatives; what it does instead is feed hard in the wash on sand fleas and shrimp, within easy casting range of the beach.

  • Soft, fleshy lips and a mouth set low for bottom feeding

  • Spawns nearshore in spring and summer
  • Cannot croak β€” the genus has no swim bladder, unusual among the drum family

How to catch them

Surf fishing in the wash zone Shore

Rig: Light 7-9 ft surf rod, two-hook bottom rig with a pyramid sinker and size 1-2/0 hooks baited with sand fleas, shrimp or clam, cast just into the wash and first trough

Bait/lure: Sand fleas, shrimp, clam

Key tip: Fish close β€” most Gulf kingfish feed in the wash at your feet, not beyond the breakers; a long cast often overshoots them.

Pier fishing the first trough Shore

Rig: Light spinning rod, small bottom rig with mole crabs dropped into the first trough from a pier or jetty

Bait/lure: Mole crabs (sand fleas)

Key tip: Drop the bait straight into the trough below the pier on a rising tide, when kingfish push in to feed on washed-out sand fleas.
