Saltwater Β· Spring through fall best; peak May to October in the surf

Southern Kingfish

Menticirrhus americanus

A humble, tasty surf panfish β€” in the Southeast, 'whiting' IS this fish. It carries faint dark bars and a single chin barbel, and it has no swim bladder, so unlike most croakers it cannot drum. Small two-hook rigs with shrimp or sand fleas are all it takes.

How to catch them

Surf fishing with two-hook bottom rigs Shore

Rig: Light surf rod, two-hook bottom rig with size 2-4 hooks and a pyramid sinker, cast into the trough behind the first sandbar

Bait/lure: Shrimp pieces, sand fleas or cut bait

Key tip: Fish the deep trough close to the beach β€” whiting feed in surprisingly shallow surf.

Pier bottom fishing with fresh shrimp Shore

Rig: Light spinning rod, small two-hook rig or Carolina rig with fresh shrimp pieces, dropped straight down beside pier pilings

Bait/lure: Fresh shrimp pieces

Key tip: Use small pieces and small hooks; rebait often because whiting nibble baits clean.
