Freshwater Β· Spring river run best; March to May, earlier than American shad

Hickory Shad

Alosa mediocris

A feisty anadromous shad of Atlantic coastal rivers, running in spring earlier than American shad. Its nickname 'fall herring' is a misnomer β€” it is a true shad, not a herring. Smaller than American shad but a strong fighter on light tackle and flies.

How to catch them

Casting shad darts and tiny spoons in spring runs River

Rig: Light spinning rod, 1/16-1/8 oz shad dart or tiny spoon cast across current below dams and retrieved through eddies

Bait/lure: Shad darts and tiny spoons (lures)

Key tip: Fish the current seams and eddies β€” hickories hold just off the fastest water.

Fly fishing with small bright streamers River

Rig: 5-6 wt fly rod, intermediate line and small bright streamers swung in tidal creeks

Bait/lure: Small bright streamers (flies)

Key tip: Swing the fly slowly across the current and hang on β€” strikes are hard for the fish's size.
