Freshwater Β· Best in the dry season and early summer; strong flows after heavy rain make fishing hard and unsafe
Malayan Mahseer
Tor tambroides
The Malayan mahseer is the great river carp of the lower Lancang (Mekong), Nujiang (Salween) and Yuanjiang (Red River) in Yunnan β a powerful, big-scaled cyprinid that anglers locally call blue or red jiluo. It is NOT on China's national protected-species list despite frequent rumours, but Yunnan resource rules, closed seasons and closed main-stem sections apply, so fish it only in open waters and follow local notices.

Identifying features
- Very large, hard cycloid scales over a deep, muscular body
- Fleshy lips with a median lobe on the lower lip and two short pairs of barbels
- Colour varies with the water: silvery-blue in clear flows (the 'blue jiluo'), fins flushed reddish in other forms ('red jiluo')
- Long dorsal fin and a deeply forked tail built for current
- Thick, blunt head with a large mouth for a carp
Habits
- Holds in deep pools and slots below rapids, moving into fast water to feed
- Omnivorous: fallen fruit, algae, snails, crabs, insects and small fish
- A famously powerful, long-running fighter that uses the current
- Most active at dawn, dusk and in stable, clearing water
- Adults migrate within big river systems with the seasons

Where to find them
- Deep pools immediately below rapids and riffles
- Rocky seams where fast water meets a slow eddy
- Undercut boulder banks on big-river bends
Where they live
How to catch them
Rapid-water lure casting River
Rig: Heavy spinning outfit, 20-30 lb braid, big spoon or deep plug cast across the heads of rapids and retrieved through the seams
Bait/lure: 1-2 oz spoons, deep-diving minnow plugs
Key tip: Let the lure swing in the current before retrieving β mahseer strike as it lifts out of the fast water.
Live-bait ledgering for big fish River
Rig: Running ledger rig with a strong hook and a live small fish or large snail bait, fished in the deep pool below a rapid
Bait/lure: Live small fish, large river snails, ripe fruit baits
Key tip: Fish at dusk and give a taking fish a moment before striking; use tackle strong enough to stop the first downstream run.
