Main targets
Largemouth Bass
Micropterus nigricans
Ambush predators of warm, weedy water. Bass reward anglers who fish cover precisely and slow down when the sun is high. The biggest fish come from warm southern waters; northern fish run smaller but hit the same cover.
Blue Tilapia
Oreochromis aureus
Mexico's main reservoir tilapia — an introduced African species that now dominates the country's presas and Central American lakes, fished year-round on small baits and light tackle along vegetated shorelines.
Charal (Pátzcuaro Whitefish complex)
Chirostoma estor
⚠ IDENTIFICATION AND RELEASE ONLY — the charales and pescados blancos (Chirostoma spp.) of Mexico's central highland lakes are a threatened complex: C. estor itself is IUCN Endangered and NOM-059-listed congeners include Critically Endangered species. Do not target or keep wild fish of this complex; check local rules for each lake and release every Chirostoma immediately, keeping it in the water.
