Main targets
Rainbow Bass (Guapote)
Parachromis dovii
The rainbow bass — the guapote — is a wolf-like cichlid predator of Nicaragua's great lakes and Costa Rica's Lake Arenal, famous for violent strikes tight to cover and a turquoise iridescent sheen. Trophy fish come from the Nicaraguan lakes in the dry season.
Jaguar Guapote
Parachromis managuensis
The jaguar guapote is a boldly spotted cichlid of Nicaragua's great lakes — tough, territorial and ready to shred any lure that passes its cover. It thrives in turbid, low-oxygen water where other predators fail.
Tropical Gar
Atractosteus tropicus
The tropical gar — the pejelagarto — is an air-breathing, armour-plated predator of the swamps from Tabasco to Costa Rica and Tabasco's most emblematic freshwater fish. Handle with care for its razor teeth — always with a glove or jaw grip.
