Main targets
Rainbow Trout
Oncorhynchus mykiss
The most accessible freshwater target in BC. Rainbows feed on chironomids in lakes and take spinners, flies and bait in rivers.
Kokanee
Oncorhynchus nerka (landlocked sockeye)
Landlocked sockeye that school in open water and bite tiny, bright offerings trolled at the exact depth of the school.
Cutthroat Trout
Oncorhynchus clarkii
A native coastal trout that hunts fry and shrimp in estuaries, beaches and small rivers. Sea-run cutthroat follow the tide, ambush baitfish along shore, and rise eagerly to flies and small spinners.
Brown Trout
Salmo trutta
A wary, largely nocturnal trout introduced from Europe, now established in Great Lakes tributaries and scattered western waters. Browns eat streamers, spinners and dry flies, with the biggest fish feeding after dark.
Golden Trout
Oncorhynchus aguabonita
California's state freshwater fish and the crown jewel of the high country β golden trout glow crimson and gold in Sierra Nevada and Rocky Mountain alpine lakes you have to hike to reach.
