Main targets
Walleye
Sander vitreus
Light-shy predators that feed hardest at dawn, dusk and after dark. Walleye are a jig fisherman's game: bottom contact is everything.
Atlantic Salmon
Salmo salar
The classic fly-rod salmon of Atlantic Canada and New England rivers. Atlantic salmon do not feed in fresh water, yet take swung and riffling flies with explosive surface strikes and long, leaping runs.
Brook Trout
Salvelinus fontinalis
A beautifully marked char native to eastern North America, at home in cold creeks, beaver ponds and backcountry lakes. Brook trout are willing biters on small spinners, worms and dry flies, and a favourite of beginners.
Lake Trout
Salvelinus namaycush
A big, long-lived char built for cold, deep lakes. Lakers cruise rocky humps hunting kokanee, whitefish and ciscoes, shallow in spring and fall and 60-120 ft down in summer.
Northern Pike
Esox lucius
A toothy ambush predator of northern weed beds, famous for explosive strikes and slime. Pike sit motionless in cover and lunge at spoons, spinnerbaits and large flies passing within range.
Arctic Char
Salvelinus alpinus
The jewel of the North — a circumpolar char of Labrador rivers, Nunavik and the tundra lakes, silver from the sea in summer and flame-red at the fall spawn.
Landlocked Atlantic Salmon
Salmo salar (landlocked form)
The Atlantic salmon that stayed home — landlocked salmon cruise the smelt schools of Maine, Quebec and Newfoundland lakes, named and managed as their own fishery, distinct from their sea-run cousins.
